A Further Boost for Tourism with Jetstar’s new Gold Coast Service
16-Nov-2010 | The Minister for Tourism, Michelle O’Byrne, today welcomed Jetstar’s announcement that it will introduce a brand new daily direct service from the Gold Coast to Hobart next month.
Ms O’Byrne said Jetstar’s decision to introduce the new service, commencing on December 22, is great news for Tasmania and for tourism.“Over the past year, the State Government has developed business cases for new and enhanced routes to Tasmania and presented those cases to airlines,” she said.
“Airlines only put on more flights and make more seats available to travellers when there is an indication that they can fill those seats.
“This major carrier has confidence in our tourism future, and this should give our industry greater confidence as well.”
Ms O’Byrne said the state’s tourism and hospitality industry, retailers and many other businesses will benefit from the additional visitors these Gold Coast flights will deliver.
“Whether visitors arrive for business, a holiday, an event or to visit friends and relatives, they all contribute to the Tasmanian economy.”
Today’s announcement comes not long after Jetstar’s recent announcements of a 40% increase in flights to Launceston from Sydney and Melbourne starting next month, and a 30% increase in flights to Hobart from Sydney and Melbourne, also beginning next month.
The extra 128,000 seats provided by the new Gold Coast service means that Jetstar have now increased services to Hobart by 40%.
“Not only is Jetstar the only airline to operate a new direct route from the Gold Coast to Tasmania, but this service also establishes a link to Tasmania from its international direct flights from Osaka and Tokyo to the Gold Coast,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“The additional 128,000 seats, along with new world-class visitor experiences like MONA, will provide us with new opportunities to bring more visitors to the state.
“The ongoing growth and sustainability of our tourism industry relies on the ability to get visitors here, and the State Government is committed to working with all our air and sea services to provide visitors and Tasmanians with good access to and from our state,” Ms O’Byrne said.
