Improving Access to Conferences for Those Living With a Disability
13-Apr-2012 | Grants of up to $12,000 are available to conference organisers wanting to improve access for people with a disability and their carers.
Tasmanian Senator Lisa Singh said the funds would enable conference organisers to support the inclusion of people with a disability, at disability-focused conferences, held in Australia during 2012-13."Grants can be used to assist people with disability and their carers with the costs of attending the conference, including conference fees, accommodation or travel," Senator Singh said.
"Services such as Auslan interpreters, live captioning services, hearing loops or note-takers for people who are deaf and hearing impaired may also be covered.
Many of us wouldn't think twice about the logistics of attending a conference, but Tasmanians with a disability can face significant barriers.
The Gillard Labor Government's National Disability Conference Initiative will help ensure those living with a disability have the same opportunities to reach their potential and participate in the community. It will also create opportunities for attendees to come together, learn together, and also learn from one another."
